I spent decades feeling like an outsider, a misfit in my own skin.  My internal world was a whirlwind of conflicting desires and seemingly incompatible passions. I judged myself harshly, convinced that my inability to fit the cookie-cutter image of a successful adult meant something was fundamentally wrong with me.

It’s only after I discovered personality quizzes, the Mayers Briggs Type Indicator being a major one for me, that I finally reconciled with myself. Turns out, I’m not that weird. Just a bit different. I have identifiable patterns that actually make sense.

There’s no “one size fits all” in life. It’s best to figure out what works best for you and your journey.

Robin S. Baker

Here’s the thing: we’re all similar but different. We process things differently, we value different things. Our needs are different. So why do we keep falling for this myth that this one business, this one product, this one solution can magically solve everything for everyone?

Maybe it’s because, in an effort to be efficient, our brain loves shortcuts, simplifying things, to the detriment of nuances. It leans towards the much simpler to digest “cookie- cutter” one-size-fits-all approach.

There are a number of issues with this approach, however:

  • It ignores your individuality, puts you in a box you likely don’t even belong in, and sets you up for failure. But undeterred, you may explore every iteration of the solution, driven by the unshakeable belief that you’ll ultimately decipher the puzzle. A tragic dedication.
  • It kills innovation: When you believe one solution is the holy grail, you stop searching for better alternatives. Goodbye progress and hello stagnation!
  • By its very nature, the One-size-fits-all approach is doomed to miss the mark, creating a fictional “average” person in its pursuit of broad appeal.

So, really you should take this generalised approach with a pinch of salt.

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Oscar Wilde

Here’s a better approach: embracing the power of customisation.

Instead of forcing yourself into a pre-made mold, tailor your approach. Embrace your individuality, experiment, and find solutions that truly fit YOU.
